Think Big
I habitually write down meaningful phrases that I read or hear for reflection and use in my business. This is one that I especially liked, “Think Big, Start Small, Act Now.” How does this phrase translate to our lives and our businesses?
Think Big – Too often we think incrementally, in small steps. Our reference point is where we are today, and we get stuck in creating a transformative vision. I am not talking about goal setting here. Rather, I am talking about your vision for yourself and your business. Think big. Create a far-reaching landscape that feels like it might not be attainable. For example, a vision statement for Seven Stones might read, “A life and business coaching company providing services that allow people to meet goals they did not think possible.” A more expansive statement is “The vision of Seven Stones is to deliver transformative services that empower individuals to thrive, creating a ripple effect that strengthens and elevates not only the person but also the businesses and communities in which they serve and live.”
Start Small – Now that you have your big vision in your line of sight, you need to construct the road to lead you there. Ask yourself what you need to do to move your life or business closer to this big new vision. This is the beginning of assessing the current goals for your organization or yourself. Do they still make sense given your big new vision? Fine-tune or make wholesale changes as needed. Once the goals are updated, you can drill down on the activities to reach the goal, essentially building a project plan to get to your big new vision.
Act Now – How many times have you or a company you worked for developed a great big idea but then analyzed it to death and never moved that idea forward? You need to be comfortable taking risks when you start moving towards your big new vision. Don’t wait, pick a relatively safe activity and begin moving forward. I love the motion that “Plan, Do, Check, Act” creates. Plan your first step, do it, check to see if it worked, and act accordingly by moving on to the next or adjusting the first.
Whether this is a vision for your personal life or your business, you may think, “I (we) can’t do that.” “People will wonder who I (we) think I (we) am (are).” Only by thinking big can we change ourselves, and our companies and make a big impact on our customers and community. Maybe your action will be an example for others to think big too.
Go for it! As always, I would be pleased to talk with you about your big new vision. Book a free discovery session via my website.
