I’m Having a Pity Party

Building a business is hard. Some days, it feels downright impossible. You pour your energy into it, only to feel like you’re spinning your wheels and not getting any traction. You feel stagnant and in a vicious cycle of effort and disappointment. I felt this way and when I did, I threw myself a good old-fashioned pity party. But I am a person of action and don’t have time or patience to be stuck in the self-imposed pity party. Have you felt stuck in your business, here’s a way to pull yourself out of the spiral.

Journal Your Wins

When we’re frustrated, we focus on everything that’s going wrong. But what about what’s going right? Take a moment and journal every single accomplishment from the past month, big or small, personal or business-related.  Maybe you had a great conversation with a potential client. Maybe you finally figured out how to update your website. Maybe you just showed up every day and kept pushing forward, even when it was tough. It all counts.

Here’s the magic of this exercise: Once you start listing your wins, you realize you haven’t been as stagnant as you thought. Progress is happening; it’s just not always obvious at the moment. Once you have done this, keep that habit going and identify three wins every day (this habit might delay any future pity parties).

Seek Out Inspiration

When you’re in a rut, fresh perspectives can work wonders. Grab a book, listen to a podcast, or dive into an article about entrepreneurship, mindset, or motivation. Someone else has been where you are, and they found a way through. Learn from them.

But don’t just consume the content, pull ideas from it that you can implement. The last time I was stuck and did not want to push on, I pulled out the book, “Coach Builder” by Donald Miller, and on pages 12 and 14, I found ideas that I could use and which gave me the renewed energy I needed.

Talk to Someone

There’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re struggling alone. But you’re not. Every entrepreneur has moments of doubt, frustration, and exhaustion. Talk to someone who gets it.

Maybe it’s a fellow business owner who can share advice. Maybe it’s a coach who can help you break through your mental blocks. Maybe it’s just a supportive friend or partner who can remind you that you’re capable and resilient.

Saying things out loud has power. It gets the frustration out of your head and gives you space to see solutions instead of just problems.

Keep Moving Forward

A pity party is fine, for a little while. But they need to end and by acknowledging the struggle, you process the frustration, and then you take action. Because the truth is, success isn’t about never feeling stuck. It’s about what you do when you are. So, what’s one small step you can take today to turn the pity party into progress?
