Who is on Your Team?

Life is a team sport. Whether in your personal or work life, the people you surround yourself with play a crucial role in your success, happiness, and overall well-being. That’s why it’s essential to take a step back every once in a while and ask yourself: Who is on my team?

Your Personal Team

In our personal lives, we want to be surrounded by people who uplift us, support us, and bring joy into our world. The best teams are made up of individuals who share our core values, challenge us to grow, and are fun to be around. But sometimes, relationships change. People grow in different directions, and what was once a strong, beneficial friendship may become a source of negativity or even toxicity.

If a friendship or personal relationship no longer serves you or drains your energy rather than replenishes it, it may be time to reassess that connection. It’s okay to “fire" a friend if the relationship has become unhealthy. My husband and I made a decision a while back to stop socializing with a couple whom we had been friends with for a long time because all our conversations with them turned negative. Sometimes it is best to move on.

Your Work Team

At work, your team is just as important. Whether you are leading an entire company or are a leader of a team, working alongside colleagues, or mentoring someone, everyone should be contributing positively. Ask yourself: Is everyone on my team doing their part? Is there someone who is holding the group back?

A toxic colleague can poison an otherwise productive work environment. Someone who gossips, complains constantly, or refuses to pull their weight can drag the whole team down. It might be time to have a tough conversation, or even part ways, if their presence is harming the team's effectiveness.

Similarly, if you have mentored someone who isn’t meeting expectations, you may need to reassess their role. Have they been given the tools and guidance needed to succeed? Have they made efforts to grow? If the answer is no, it might be time to make a difficult decision about their future on your team.

You Can’t Do It Alone

At the end of the day, none of us can achieve our best alone. We all need a strong team, whether in our personal lives or our professional world. Evaluating who is on your team and making necessary changes isn’t about being harsh or uncaring; it’s about setting yourself up for success, happiness, and fulfillment.

Surround yourself with the right people. Build a team that supports, challenges, and inspires you. And don’t be afraid to make changes when necessary, because the right team makes all the difference.
