Just ask for help
I am an independent person who generally thinks I can do anything. Over time, I have learned that I can’t do everything and should leave some things to the experts (I have a bad memory of highlighting my daughter’s hair because I thought, “How hard can it be?” Well, it was, and it had to be corrected by an expert). While now I know I can’t do everything, I am still very independent which is good until it is not. What do I mean? Sometimes being independent means, you don’t want to ask for help when you need to. What are the reasons we won’t ask for help and how should we overcome them?
Embarrassment: There’s often a stigma attached to needing help. You might worry about being perceived as weak or incapable. This fear can prevent you from reaching out, even when you genuinely need support. To overcome this, recognize that everyone needs help at some point and therefore they won’t judge you for asking. Sharing your struggles and asking for help can strengthen your relationship with the person you are asking.
Uncertainty About Who to Ask: It can be daunting to choose the right person for help. In thinking this through, be specific about what you need and what you know about those people you might ask. Do they have expertise that will be helpful? Have they been through a similar situation and have experiences they can share? If they can’t help, make sure to ask if they will introduce you to someone who might.
What Happens After You Ask: Even if you get the courage to ask for help, you might feel unsure about what to do next. Be specific about what you need. This clarity can guide the person you’re asking and make it easier for them to provide the support you’re looking for. Whether you receive the help you expected or not, show appreciation and willingness to help that person in the future if she needs it.
Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. You are showing confidence by admitting you need support. Everyone has their struggles, and reaching out could not only provide you with the support you need but also inspire others to be open about their challenges.
